International students enter the ship as Special Persons (Trainees) under an Australian Marine Crew Visa (MCV).
They do not crew as employees of the ship.
They are not passengers, neither fare paying nor as guests of the ship.
They are students of the Academy, hosted by the ship.
International students enter the ship under the supervision of the Academy Master on Behalf of the Principal, under a training contract with Australian Cruise Academy, a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) in a hosting agreement with the ship. Trainees are under the direction and supervision of the Academy Principal through Academy Masters by agreement with the Ship's Captain who has ultimate authority on the ship on behalf of the owners.
The hosting agreement includes training and mentoring of trainees by Academy trainer assessors and by ship's crew. Access to the workplaces of the ship is part of the agreement.
Part of the RTO training contract requires industry placement work experience which is ongoing during the duration of the training course on the ship. This volunteer work experience is undertaken as part of an accredited training course by agreement with the Principal and the Captain. Academy Masters will work with designated ship's crew supervisor in the industry work experience placement relationship.
- Industry work experience requires working alongside the ship's crew as mentors, to achieve the required level of competency in the tasks required by the course.
- There is no offer of payment by the ship for the work involved.
- There is no offer of employment by the ship on the achievement of the required competency under the assessment conditions of the RTO.
- There is no time limit for the amount of experience required for the achievement of competency as each person is different.
The Trainee is to take any unresolved disputes or concerns of any type to the Academy Master. The Academy Master will assist in the resolution of the dispute, if necessary in cooperation with the designated ship's crew supervisor. Trainees are expected to take direction and guidance from their mentors in all aspects of the work experience. A close working relationship is expected.
