Coxswain Grade 1 Near Coastal is the commercial ticket to operate a commercial passenger vessel less than 12m in length in near coastal waters up to 15nm from shore, in the Murray River or within 3nm of a mother ship in the EEZ.
Propulsion power is unlimited for an outboard engine or up to 500 kW for an inboard engine
Licensing/Regulatory Information
This level of qualification is currently cited as meeting some of the requirements for certification as a Coxswain Grade 1 Near Coastal as defined by the National Standard for Commercial Vessels (NSCV) Part D.
ACA presents the total program including qualifying sea time and final assessment for Commercial certification:
MAR20313 Certificate II in Maritime Operations (Coxswain Grade 1 Near Coastal),
NB: Sea Safety units are required for all students during orientation week
- Provide First Aid
- Apply basic survival skills in the event of vessel abandonment
- Survive at sea using survival craft
- Follow procedures to minimise and fight fires on board a vessel
- Perform basic servicing and maintenance of the main propulsion unit and auxiliary systems
- Operate inboard and outboard motors
- Operate main propulsion unit and auxiliary systems
- Meet work health and safety requirements
- Plan and navigate a passage for a vessel up to 12 metres
- Comply with regulations to ensure safe operation of a vessel up to 12 metres
- Follow environmental work practices
- Handle a vessel up to 12 metres
- Apply seamanship skills aboard a vessel up to 12 metres
- qualifying sea service and completed Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) approved task book OR extended qualifying sea service including 50% outside of 15 nautical miles from shore,
- a VHF marine radio operator certificate of proficiency
- Final assessment by ACA with notification to AMSA for the issuance of the ticket.
